How to mount filesystem as writable in Mac OS X single user mode

At the Darwin Boot Screen

type: -v -s to boot into single user mode.
Then type "/sbin/fsck -fy" followed by "/sbin/mount -uw /"
(as it says in the text it prints out before the prompt) in order to remount the filesystem as writable.
